Cyberpunk 2077 patch fixes the game’s most frustrating bug and Idris Elba’s fashion faux pas-
While CD Projekt Red is sadly moving on from Cyberpunk 2077 to focus on the sequel, meaning we won’t be getting any more expansions or significant updates, there’s still a wee bit of polishing to do. Update 2.0 and Phantom Liberty arrived in a good state, but there’s still some room for improvement, which is what patch 2.01 is focused on, squashing some bugs—including a particularly annoying one that’s been around for years—and buffing the game’s performance, particularly in Dogtown.
Players who encountered the visual bug where the glitchy blue effect that briefly occurs during scripted story moments persists forever have finally been given a reprieve that doesn’t require the installation of a mod. These glitches are meant to reinforce the effect of the Relic in V’s noggin, which is killing them, but are only meant to last for a few seconds. In some cases, however, after experiencing this during the Automatic Love quest, players have reported it never going a…

Large-scale game development is ‘crushing under its own weight’ according to Devolver co-founder-
Devolver Digital is known for working with independent developers on games like Human Fall Flat, Children of the Sun, Cult of the Lamb, and, honestly, most of the quirky indie games that you can think of. While it has made a name for itself by championing the little guy, its co-founder, Nigel Lowrie, admits that competing against live service games and existing in the current gaming ecosphere isn’t the easiest thing to do.
During the last Game Developers Conference (GDC) in mid-March, Lowrie discussed these issues in an interview with Games Industry.biz and what it means for the publisher. “There’s us, on maybe the smaller-to-medium-size end. But on the larger end, it feels like [game development] is crushing under its own weight a little bit,” Lowrie says. “The consumers are so tied up in some of these really fantastic live service games, but there’s only so much time they can spend. So there are more and more huge games being launched, asking for an enormous amount of …
Fans reached out to Microsoft to save a 2000s-era FPS from the brink, and it paid off- ‘it actually kinda works better’-
I just found out that Shadowrun, Dungeons & Dragons’ cyberpunk cousin, had a Counter-Strike style FPS game. I also just found out that you can still play it, thanks to some determined fans and an active Discord community.
A recent thread on the ResetEra forums by user wwm0nkey has revealed that the game’s matchmaking has been patched up after a plea to Microsoft after a recent server update accidentally broke what was left of its matchmaking. Shadowrun’s multiplayer had been presumed dead in the ground for years after its dedicated servers shut down, but it was eventually discovered that it still worked via some peer-to-peer backend wizardry. This led to an explosion of activity within a Discord community of dedicated fans named “This is Shadowrun”.
This group of ride-or-die fans got a small community up and running, though things grew dire when a surprise update threatened to knock it all down. “A few days ago Microsoft updated some [Xbox 360] matchmakin…
Melvor Idle, the Runescape-inspired idle game with an ‘overwhelmingly positive’ rating, is free on the Epic Games Store-
The next free game in the Epic Game Store’s Holiday Sale giveaway-a-thon is Melvore Idle, an “idle/incremental game” inspired by Runescape that blends casual click-here gameplay with a surprising level of complexity.
Melvor Idle mimics Runescape’s skill system in many ways, and in fact it’s published by Jagex, which picked up the game in 2021. But the gameplay is completely different: In this incremental idler, you’re just clicking now and then to make things happen. Cut down some trees? Click. Catch some fish? Click. Smith a dagger? Click.
It’s very simple (and meant to be so: “Maxing 20+ skills has never been more zen,” the Epic Store listing says) but it also promises an element of complexity that might not be immediately apparent. “Every skill in this game serves a purpose, interacting with the others in interesting ways. This means all the hard work you put into one skill will in turn benefit others. What strategy will you conjure to achieve maximum skillage?”…
One of the best fantasy 4Xs on PC is free while the Steam keys last-
Endless Space and Humankind studio Amplitude is marking its 13th birthday, and to celebrate it’s giving out free Steam copies of Endless Legend, its underrated fantasy 4X that apparently released all the way back in 2014. So there’s a Friday morning confrontation with mortality for you.
You can pick the game up by heading over to the Amplitude Studios community website and then, well, going through a little bit of a rigamarole. You’ll need to make an account, verify your email, then head into your account settings and link the thing up with Steam. Once you’ve done that, just return to that page linked above and click on the Endless Legend image halfway down the page to get your free Steam key.
It’s a bit long-winded, or at least it was for me when I tried it out, but Endless Legend is worth it. When it came out in 2014, when the world was young and dinosaurs walked the Earth, it earned PCG’s coveted Commendation for Design award in that year’s GOTY awards. It still occup…
New League of Legends champion Hwei is suspiciously similar to one of Dota 2’s hardest-to-use heroes-
League of Legends’ new champion Hwei is a human mage designed to be played in the mid-lane, and he has 10 different spells that take more than one button press to cast. If you happen to be a Dota 2 fan that might sound a little familiar, as Invoker—a wizard dating all the way back to Warcraft 3 mod Defense of the Ancients—basically does the same thing.
During a presentation of Hwei and his abilities, some of the developers who have worked on the new champion said that they are aware of Invoker, but Hwei was never designed to be LoL’s version of the character. Designer Myles Shalholm mentioned that an early version of Hwei would actually make you pick a colour of paint—which was tied into his lore as a mage painter—and a shape to cast a spell for that combo. That unique bit of backstory actually sounds even more similar to Invoker and how he mixes his elements, but Riot’s final design has moved away from that idea. Instead Hwei’s nine base skill…
Slash and shoot your way through a procedural bug hole in Ants Took My Eyeball-
A new 2D action-platforming roguelike released today, with Ants Took My Eyeball challenging you to descend into an ever-changing ant hill in search of your missing body part. Swapping between melee weapons, ranged weapons, gadgets, and trinkets, your job is to go as deep as you can before coming back for another try.
It’s a pretty delightfully fast-paced experience, emphasizing a twitch-based shooting and smashing action that really shines as you get better and better on each new run. Your stuff also gets upgraded mid-hive, as you scrap extra items for gold and parts to upgrade the best among the loot you’ve found to use.
The deeper you get the more gems you can find, and those gems have lots of useful effects between attempts at the ant hill. That stuff gives you ever-more permanent upgrades to boost yourself at the start of each journey into the ant hill. “And who knows, there could also be other permanent unlocks to be found somewhere deep inside the ant hill,” …
Say goodbye to absurdly cheap Game Pass- Microsoft is killing the $1 trial-
Bad news, everyone: We’ll no longer be able to live high on the hog of Microsoft’s largesse. The Verge reports that the company is terminating its long-lived—and very persuasive—$1 Game Pass Ultimate trial, which gave you a month’s access to the 100+ games in the PC and Xbox Game Pass libraries for the low, low price of barely anything.
Microsoft hasn’t said why it’s choosing to retire the $1 trial now, after so many years of availability, but did tell The Verge that it’s “evaluating different marketing promotions for new members in the future”. It could well be the case that the trial ends up replaced by some other scheme designed to tempt players onto the full $15/£11 per month Game Pass bandwagon in the near future.
I’ve reached out to Microsoft to ask about its choice to retire the trial, and I’ll update this piece if I hear back.
Game Pass has fallen short of Microsoft’s targets for two years in a row now. Fiscal year 2022 (which ended on Jun…
